3. Shopping with Carercard

Shopping with Carercard means a simpler and safer way for money handling in care – better than cash or a borrowed card.

It is a Mastercard® prepaid card, for use wherever you see the ‘Mastercard Acceptance Mark’. This really means anywhere you would normally use a credit or debit card.

Prepaid means you have to load it with cash and keep it regularly topped up, but there’s no credit available so you don’t have to worry about spending more than you’ve budgeted.

The Hestian Carercard Prepaid Mastercard is issued by Prepaid Financial Services Limited pursuant to a license from Mastercard International Incorporated. Prepaid Financial Services Limited is authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority under the Electronic Money Regulations 2011, firm reference number 900036, for the issuance of electronic money and provision of payment services. Registered Office: Fifth Floor, Langham House, 302-308 Regent Street, London, W1B 3AT. Company Registration number: 06337638.

Shopping in stores

Carercard is contactless, so you can tap and spend, up to the current £45. The first time you use in store, you will need to use your PIN for a transaction. After that, the card can be used contactless.

Shopping online – an authentication process (‘3DS’) for online purchasing

A Europe wide improved secure authentication process has been introduced for shopping when conducted online (not in stores). This has been introduced for all cards.

During the ‘checkout’ stage, a one-time passcode may be sent by the retailer by mobile SMS message to authenticate a cardholder’s purchase.

You will therefore need your mobile phone when shopping online.
